Cape Town, South Africa

Ray’s maternal grandmother Florence may Emily Day, migrated to Australia with her parents William and Florence (nee Warrell) Day in 1909. They departed London on 11 Oct 1909 coming to Sydney via Cape Town.

They travelled on ‘The Commonwealth’, Lund’s Blue, part of the Blue Anchor Line, which was a British shipping company operating between the United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia between 1870 and 1910.

William and Florence travelled with Henry Day, Williams brother and his wife Agnes. It is unclear whether William and Agnes had married before leaving England, they are listed as single on the shipping records, but both travelled as Day. There is also a John Day on the ship, who is about the right age to be their uncle, however this is not confirmed.
